9 Black and White Bathroom Ideas
Black and white tile bathrooms are one of the most popular design schemes for good reason. This combo creates a foundation that holds up to trends and style changes.
We’ve pulled nine black and white bathroom photos from our recent projects to show you how versatile this combo can really be. Each example shows how these colours work in Australian homes with different layouts and fixtures.
White and black bathroom ideas you’ll love
Here’s how renovators are using black and white bathroom tiles in different ways — from subtle contrast to statement spaces.
1. Plenty of black

This bathroom uses black across the walls and vanity, but it doesn’t feel too dark thanks to the white terrazzo tile. The Rose Bay Carrara Look Tile has a pale base with soft movement, which balances out the black.
When you’re using more black, the lighting also matters. In rooms with good natural light or overhead lighting, you can afford to go deeper with wall colour or cabinetry. The Carrara Look helps reflect light back into the space to stop the black from closing the bathroom in.
2. Low contrast black and white
You don’t always need a sharp line between dark and light. This bathroom softens the contrast with muted tones and matte finishes using a grey terrazzo-look tile. The tile helps connect all the elements, so the overall space feels calm rather than high-contrast.
This approach works particularly well when you want to add interest without feeling like the space is overly styled. A muted scheme is also more forgiving — dust and fingerprints tend to show up less on black and terrazzo.
3. Black and white bathtub
This space centres around a white freestanding bath, which really stands out thanks to the way the entry is framed with black panels.
And even though the bath is the focus, the tile choices are doing a lot of work in the background. The Riverton Matte Grey Subway Tile wraps around the top of the walls, while grey terrazzo tiles cover the lower half.
4. Muted blacks and greys
Instead of boldness, this bathroom leans on minimalism. The Sydney Matte Grey Stone Look Tile has an understated vibe that can cover every surface without feeling overwhelming. It’s paired with Yabby’s Gunmetal tapware, which creates a little touch of contrast.
What makes this space work is the consistency in tone. Everything leans towards mid-grey or soft black, so nothing pulls focus. If you're not into strong visual contrast but still want a black and white look, this is a good in-between.
5. Painted black vanity
A black vanity is a good way to bring in contrast without committing to dark tiles. Here it’s paired with white subways and grey terrazzo tiles, which add just enough pattern to stop the room from feeling flat.
This idea is also practical — vanities are easier to update and refresh than floors or wall tiles, so it’s a safe way to experiment with darker colour. It also gives the room a bit more definition and can help anchor other details like black tapware or mirror frames.
6. Mix-and-match styles
There’s no rule to say you can’t experiment with different tile textures and patterns in the same space.
This bathroom leans into mix-and-match and comes out looking stylish and original. It brings in texture and variation using Coogee Antique White Kit Kat Mosaics against black and white terrazzo tiles. The warm shower ledge light softens the palette slightly, but it still sits comfortably within the black and white range.
7. Black, white and neutral
Adding subtle colours like neutral is an easy way to warm up a black white bathroom without stealing too much of the focus.
In this space, Thirroul White Matte Subway tiles, white walls and counters blend in with the light timber vanity and beige blinds. The black tapware, drawer pulls and mirror frame add some contrast to the bathroom. This is a great way to do black and white without it feeling stark.
8. Contrasting accessories
Black and white make a solid base for other colours. This bathroom uses Newport Gloss Subway White Tile with Stirling White Terrazzo Look Tile on the floor. The Yabby Brushed Brass tapware and burnt orange hand towel stand out against the tiles and introduce some warmth.
This is a good option if you want flexibility. A neutral bathroom aesthetic means you can change out tapware or accessories later without touching the foundations.
9. Black and white marble
Classic combinations still hold up — especially when done like this. The black and white marble bathtub and counters tie in so well with the similarly-coloured floors and walls.
On the floor, we’ve got the Brighton Beach Black Encaustic Look Hexagon Tile, and on the walls, the Newport Gloss Subway White Tiles. If you're planning to invest in a marble counter or feature bath, this kind of tile pairing will help it stand out.
