The Balgownie kitchen project by Roki design studio - Industry insights

Layla Sawyer -
The girls have done it again! Best friend duo Rochelle and Nicola at Roki Design Studio have used our Newport matt small white subway tile with grey grout for the perfect modern farmhouse kitchen!

Tell us a bit about this project!
The Balgownie kitchen was such a wonderful project to be part of. The transformation of the space is truly amazing and has lifted the entire feel of the house. The best part is our clients are just so happy with their new space and can’t quite believe it’s actually THEIRS!

Why did the clients want to renovate their existing kitchen?
Our beautiful clients reached out to help redesign their kitchen and dining space, as the existing layout and style just wasn’t working for them. They had made some updates to other parts of their home and wanted to create a beautiful new space in keeping with the existing improvements, but really wanted to elevate the heart of their home. Their ultimate wish was to create a separate butlers pantry, so we workshopped a few ideas navigating the existing doorways and traffic areas to create a design that was both very functional and beautiful at the same time. The other must have was a large island bench where they could gather as a family, socialize and spend quality time together.

What was the brief from the clients?
To help establish the style direction, we asked our clients to create a Pinterest board and save some inspiration photo’s. From there we established that they really loved a combination of Farmhouse, Scandi and Industrial styles. We then created a custom moodboard and design featuring the beautiful dark cabinetry, custom detailed rangehood, and importantly that showstopping island bench. The details to create this look started at the flooring, with the beautiful terrazzo look floor tile. The lighter background colour elevates the space in contrast to the dark cabinetry, while the terrazzo flecks pick up the dark greys and charcoals of the cabinetry, grout and tapware. Utilising the darker grout around the subway tile splashback created contrast and introduced the industrial look that our clients desired.

What are your go-to tips for styling a Kitchen?
When styling the kitchen we are mindful not to compete with the existing colours and patterns, but rather compliment them. Adding fresh foliage and fruits along with a few practical accessories strategically arranged brings the space to life without cluttering.
