Grout Replacement and Repair: Giving Your Tiles a Refresh

Mark Wilkinson -

Tiles are a focal point in your home. Yet, for every beautiful tile layout, there's the essential element of grout that binds these tiles, ensuring stability and a polished finish. As time goes on, grout can naturally wear down, affecting the pristine look of your tiles. When you notice this, it’s the perfect opportunity to refresh your grout and restore the space.

Spotting the Signs: When Does Grout Need Some TLC?

Just like that favourite white shirt that starts to fade after many washes, grout too can show signs of ageing. Here's how to tell if your grout is crying out for help:

Discolouration: If your once-white grout now looks more grey (and not in a good way), it might be time for a touch-up.

Cracking: Notice little fissures or cracks? This could be a sign of underlying issues or simply the grout's way of saying it's tired.

Mould and Mildew: Especially common in bathrooms, dark spots or patches indicate mould growth, a definite sign your grout needs attention.

Loose Tiles: If the tiles start wobbling under your feet or seem less firmly set, the grout might be losing its grip.

If you've nodded along to any of the above, don't worry! We’re here with all the solutions, from the perfect grout to expert advice.

Steps to Repair and Replace

Repairing or replacing grout isn't as daunting as it sounds. With the right tools and a bit of patience, your tiles will be back to looking great in no time!

1. Clean the Area:

Starting with a clean surface ensures better adhesion of the new grout and prevents contaminants from getting trapped.

How? Use a mild detergent and water to scrub the tiles and grout lines. For tougher stains or mould, consider using a grout cleaner. Rinse thoroughly and let it dry.

2. Remove Damaged Grout:

Old or damaged grout can compromise the integrity of the new grout you're about to apply.

How? Utilise a grout saw, removal tool, or even a screwdriver for smaller areas. Gently run the tool along the grout lines, chipping away the old material. Remember to work slowly to avoid chipping the tiles.

3. Mix the New Grout:

Properly mixed grout ensures it adheres well and dries to a strong finish.

How? Using a mixing paddle and bucket, combine the grout powder with water. Aim for a paste-like consistency, similar to peanut butter. Avoid overmixing, which can introduce air bubbles.

4. Apply the Grout:

This step fills the voids between tiles, providing a cohesive look and preventing moisture intrusion.

How? Scoop some grout onto a rubber float and spread it over the tiles, pressing diagonally into the gaps. This 45-degree angle technique ensures the grout fills the spaces evenly.

5. Wipe Away Excess:

Removing excess grout while it's still wet is easier than after it has hardened.

How? Wait for about 10-15 minutes after applying, then use a damp (not wet) sponge to gently wipe the tiles in a circular motion. Regularly rinse the sponge to keep it clean.

6. Let it Dry:

Grout needs time to cure and harden to achieve its full strength.

How? Allow the grout to dry for the duration specified on its packaging. Aim to keep the area free from foot traffic during this time. This can range from a few hours to over a day, depending on the product. If you have the Mapei Grout Ultracolor Plus, the area will be ready for use after 24 hours.

7. Seal the Deal:

Sealing grout protects it from moisture, stains, and external contaminants, prolonging its lifespan.

How? Once the grout is completely dry, apply a grout sealer using a brush or spray bottle. Ensure even coverage, and wipe away any excess sealer from the tile surfaces. Let the sealer dry for the time recommended on its label.

Why Bother with Grout Repair?

Apart from aesthetic reasons, well-maintained grout ensures the longevity of your tiles. It prevents moisture from seeping underneath, which can lead to loose tiles or, worse, mould growth beneath them. Plus, refreshed grout can instantly brighten a room, making it look cleaner and more updated.
